Biology
The Biology major is a general major that includes breadth of study in the many areas of biology in the context of the liberal arts tradition of the College. The curriculum includes required courses to ensure that students have the knowledge and skills for entry level jobs in the field and/or graduate study, and elective courses which allow students to tailor the major to their interests. Small classes, lectures, seminars and hands-on laboratory experiences are associated with most courses, aiding in the development of problem solving and critical thinking skills. An undergraduate research experience or internship is required.
Developing the ability of each student as a creative problem solver for the scientific age is the goal of the department. The biology major gives students a basic preparation for numerous careers in microbiology, public health, physiology, immunology, and cell biology. Preparation for medical, dental, veterinary, pharmacy, physical therapy and other allied health careers will be achieved through the pre-professional concentration.
Students who are interested in medical, dental, veterinary, pharmacy, physical therapy and other allied health careers are encouraged to pursue the Pre-Professional concentration. This major, combined with the College's general education program, provides the background for students to apply to the professional programs and/or take the appropriate admissions tests [e.g. the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT)].
