PS 551 Psychology of Leading People
Leadership begins with self-awareness. This course explores the psychological foundations of leadership, focusing on how individuals develop their individual leadership identity, navigate personal biases, and leverage their strengths to influence others effectively. Students will take the Gallup Strengths Assessment to identify their unique strengths and integrate them into their leadership framework. Through an examination of self-serving biases, emotional and cultural intelligence, personality differences, and motivation, students will develop a deeper understanding of their leadership approach. The course emphasizes strategies for regulating interpersonal emotions, making ethical decisions, and adapting leadership styles based on psychological insights. By engaging in self-reflection, practical exercises, and leadership assessments, students will refine their ability to lead authentically and with purpose. This course provides a foundation for developing a personal leadership philosophy that enhances effectiveness, resilience, and ethical decision-making in any professional setting.
